About Prof. Dr. Matthias Siegmann

Matthias Siegmann has been working as a lawyer since 1993 and was admitted to the Federal Court of Justice in 2007. He has more than 30 years of experience in the appeals court.

Training

After studying in Freiburg and Norwich (UK), Matthias Siegmann earned his doctorate in Freiburg – supported by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation – on a topic at the interface of corporate law and inheritance law.

Legal work

After completing his legal traineeship in Freiburg, Matthias Siegmann began his legal career in 1993 with a renowned lawyer at the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe. In 1998, Matthias Siegmann founded the law firm Siegmann & Kollegen, which Jochen Höger has also been a member of since 2005. There, Matthias Siegmann handled a large number of economically significant civil cases in the courts throughout Germany, including the largest attorney liability case of the last decades for the then law firm Haarmann Hemmelrath.

Lawyer at the Federal Court of Justice

In 2007, Matthias Siegmann was appointed as a lawyer at the Federal Court of Justice and subsequently worked as a sole practitioner at the Federal Court of Justice. Since then, he has handled more than 10,000 appeals, non-admission appeals, and legal appeals and is looking forward to continuing this work in in Siegmann Höger Rechtsanwälte at the Federal Court of Justice (Partnerschaft mbB), founded in July 2025.

Other professional activities

Matthias Siegmann has been involved in numerous major DIS arbitrations over the past twenty years as a party-appointed arbitrator or chairman.

Teaching and publications

Since 2009, Matthias Siegmann has taught numerous courses at the University of Heidelberg, which appointed him honorary professor in 2016. To this day, he regularly teaches civil procedure and insolvency law there. He also participates in continuing legal education, for example, at the annual DAIvent in Travemünde in the area of ​​banking law. Matthias Siegmann is also co-editor of the loose-leaf publication “Bankrecht und Bankingpraxis” (Bank Law and Bank Practice) and contributes as an author to various leading commentaries, notably the BeckOK German Civil Code (BGB), the MünchKomm InsO (Insolvency Code), the Lawyers’ Handbook on Inheritance Law, and the Munich Handbook of Corporate Law. He has published numerous articles and commentaries on supreme court jurisprudence.
